“We’re all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn’t. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing.”
- Charles Bukowski “The Captain is Out to Lunch and the Sailors have taken over the Ship (1998)

“but my fear is this prison… that I keep locked below the main deck
I keep a key under my pillow, it’s quiet and it’s hidden
and my hopes are weapons that I’m still learning how to use right
but they’re heavy and I’m awkward…always running out of fight”
- Listener “wooden heart”

I first heard this one a while back, from the first second i was hooked. There is something so indescribable about the entire song and everytime i listen to it there is a different line that catches my attention just that little bit more than the rest.
My favourite? “come on and sew us together, just some tattered rags stained forever”. The way he says that line, the pure unadulterated understanding of how people are - all of us are broken and bruised…’stained’ but we can be like that together. Dan Smith is a genius.Fact.

Oh and the video? Magical. Beautiful. Sublime.

”Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name”This is one of my favourite lines from *any* piece of literature. John Proctor is perfectly flawed.

I know when most think of James Dean they think of ‘Rebel without a cause’ but for me it will always be ‘East of Eden’. It was the first film i watched him in and the combination of him and Elia Kazan is just fantastic.

”She chose to walk alone

Though others wondered why
Refused to look before her,
Kept eyes cast upwards,
Towards the sky.

She didn’t have companions
No need for earthly things.
Only wanted freedom,
From what she felt were
Puppet strings.

She longed to be a bird. That she might fly away.
She pitied every blade of grass
For planted they would stay.

She longed to be a flame,
That brightly danced alone.
Felt jealous of the steam
That made the air its only home.

Some say she wished too hard.
Some say she wished too long.
But we awoke one autumn day
To find that she was gone.

The trees, they say stood witness.
The sky refused to tell.
But someone who had seen it said
The story played out well.

She spread her arms out wide.
Breathed in the break of dawn.
She just let go of all she held…

And then she was gone”
